Job Opportunities/Staff Vacancies

St Catherine's is an independent school in all respects. There's a freedom here, despite the high academic expectations. Educating the girls fully is our priority, and if that means going beyond the confines of the syllabus, bring it on! There's a freedom to think, to teach and to learn here. I like that.”

St Catherine’s, founded in 1885, is one of the UK’s premier girls’ independent schools with an enviable reputation for the quality of its teaching, the strong House system,  the broad extra-curricular provision  and the calibre of students. St Catherine’s Preparatory and Senior School educates girls from 4+ through to the Sixth Form.  We welcome day girls from 4+; girls may board from age 11. There are outstanding facilities on-site, affording both boarders and day girls across both schools an educational experience which is second to none.

In 2014 St Catherine’s topped the Surrey League tables for points per candidate at A Level.  In 2017 over 91% of GCSE grades were A*/A. Oxbridge candidates meet their offers and our Destination of Leavers data is always impressive with most girls choosing to go to prestigious Russell Group universities.

St Catherine’s is a happy school where there is a great deal of humour and fun. The girls are ambitious and develop qualities which prepare them to go out into the world as confident, independent learners. They enjoy high quality, stimulating teaching every day from the Prep School through to the Sixth Form. They feel deep loyalty to St Catherine’s and, of course, each other, fostered by a well-established and popular House system which underpins the whole school. The girls appreciate that they receive a privileged education which, in turn, encourages them to give back to society.  Our alumnae gain fine degrees and professional qualifications but also steep themselves in pro bono work at their colleges and universities.

There has been major investment in new facilities with significant recent investment in adding to and improving the School’s infrastructure. This has entailed the construction of three major buildings on the Senior School site – the Anniversary Halls Performing Arts Auditorium/Theatre and Sports Hall complex in 2011, the dedicated Sixth Form Library in 2013 and, most recently, the refurbished Lecture Theatre and Foyer in 2015. There is a regular rolling programme of investment in IT and St Catherine’s is an iPad school. We also invest in bursaries, allowing girls from a wide socio-economic background to take advantage of an education at St Catherine’s.

We enjoy the patronage of HRH The Duchess of Cornwall whose great-great grandfather was one of the founders of the School.

St Catherine’s lies at the centre of the village of Bramley, 3 miles south of Guildford, in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty:  The Surrey Hills. Nearby Guildford is a beautiful, historic town with excellent road and rail links to London which can be reached in just 30 minutes and there is quick access by road or rail to Gatwick and Heathrow Airports.  This part of the country is regularly ranked as one of the top 10 places in which to live, based on factors such as employment opportunities, the quality of education and health, access to leisure pursuits and open countryside.

Our recent inspection report

We were very proud of the findings of the inspectors from the Independent Schools Inspectorate in October 2016 who deemed the School to be excellent in all areas.

Perhaps the concluding remark sums up best of all what a St. Catherine’s education is all about:

By the time they leave school, they are able to think critically, have high aspirations and a self-belief that there are few things that they cannot achieve.

Comments from our recent Quality Assurance visit by ISTip (February 2018), the awarding body we use for our NQT programme:

  • “Statutory induction at St Catherine’s School remains a beacon of best practice. The process is carried out with commitment, enthusiasm and great care. The school considers the training of its new teachers and the development of its staff to be a priority and this ethos is embedded into the induction of the NQTs.”
  • There are several ways in which the school demonstrates best practice, perhaps the main one being the commitment to the process amply demonstrated by NQTs and ITs alike.”
  • “The quality of the evidence gathered by NQTs….is some of the best I have ever seen.”

What do our staff say about working at St Catherine’s?

“St Catherine’s is a family school. The presence of the boarding community strengthens this feeling, but it is all pervasive. It's not just cool to be clever at St Catherine’s; it's cool to be kind.”

“What's striking about St Cat’s is the confidence of the girls and their willingness to step up and try something new or challenging, and to pull it off with aplomb! This chutzpah is infectious”

“Staff and the girls are forward-thinking of technology”

“The School is well-rounded, with a rich tapestry of opportunities for girls and staff”

“The thing I enjoy the most is working with the girls"

“St Catherine’s is embracing of the now with a rooting in the past, providing both a foundation and stability”

“We are privileged to have a real sense of history with a rich heritage”
