THE SIXTH FORM: Looking forward

Boarding in the Sixth Form is designed to give the girls high levels of personal responsibility and independence in preparation for life beyond school. Girls in Sixth Form boarding enjoy an environment that, whilst still being both supporting and caring, encourages them to develop into independent young women, ready to embrace the next step of their lives when most girls go on to university or specialist art, music and drama schools. All Sixth Formers, boarders and day girls, are allowed to wear their own clothes.

About half of the Sixth Form chooses to board and the Sixth Form House is a building which accommodates up to 84 girls in a modern building located at the front of the School with its own entrance. Most share twin rooms similar to much university accommodation. Sharing rooms allows the girls to make close friends, to look out for one another, and to learn to respect each other’s space and tolerate any foibles. In their first term, Lower 6 girls who are new to the School will share with a girl who already knows St Catherine’s. For the other two terms, girls decide themselves with whom they would like to share.

The Lower 6 and Upper 6 common rooms are well equipped, each with a kitchen, sofas, Freeview TV and DVD player. There are many opportunities to take part in a wide variety of weekend activities such as theatre trips, clay pigeon shooting, macaroon making and visits to restaurants; there is always something to do in Sixth Form boarding!

The house is run by the Housemistress, Mrs Alexander, along with her Assistant, Miss Kirrage, and a team of resident House Tutors. Together, they aim to ensure that all girls in the Sixth Form feel welcome and that the boarding house is very much a home-from-home experience

Meet the Housemistress: Mrs Vic Alexander

Mrs Alexander is married to Jeff Alexander, who works in insurance, as an underwriter in aviation at Lloyds of London. They have 2 children, Freddie, aged 10, who attends Cranmore Prep School and Archie, who is aged 11. Archie is Autistic and attends a local school up the road from St Catherine’s called Gosden House School which by coincidence is one of our partner schools. Both boys enjoy living at the school especially their great big ‘park’ – and you can often see them cycling, skating or generally charging around!

Mrs Alexander was previously the Director of Sport for 15 years here at St Catherine’s and knows the school extremely well. She, herself, was a boarder at Queen Anne’s School, Caversham, and thoroughly enjoyed boarding life. She says that when she was at school as a pupil she was a ‘loveable rogue’, and she knows much about all aspects of boarding!

As well as being the boarding Housemistress of the Sixth Form house, Mrs Alexander teaches A Level PE, continues to coach lacrosse with the U14,U15 and 1st teams and is working alongside the marketing and outreach teams to raise the profile of both boarding and St Catherine’s to the wider community.

Mrs Alexander continues to remain fit and active – playing lacrosse and netball regularly and, of course, you can often see her pounding the streets of Bramley, on the school playing fields or making use of the wonderful Anniversary Halls facilities. She also enjoys historical documentaries, dramas and reading fiction.
